CodeSpin

CodeSpin is a game for the iPhone and iPod Touch where you have to guess the secret code number.

Spin the number wheels to select your guess then press the Enter Guess button. The computer will tell you how many digits you got right but in the wrong place (Number) and how many you got right and in the right place (Sequence).

For example, if the code is 1,2,3 and you guessed 1,3,4 then the display will show Sequence: 1 and Number: 1. Points are awarded for speed and for the least number of guesses – and in the next round you will have less time!

Changing the difficulty

Note that you can change the difficulty of the game by choosing a skill level in the iPhone/iPod Touch Settings menu. Quit the game, and click on the Settings icon on the home screen, and look for the CodeSpin icon.

More about ‘Sequence’ and ‘Number’

Remember that if you have a digit repeated in your guess, each instance of that digit will be reflected in the ‘Number’ and ‘Sequence’ displays. For example, if the secret code is 1,2,3 and your guess is 1,1,1 then the display will show Sequence: 1 and Number: 2. The first digit in your guess was correct and in the correct place, so that generated the 1 for Sequence. The second digit was also a number in the secret code, but in the wrong place, so that gives you a result for ‘Number’ – but remember that the third digit was also a number in the secret code but in the wrong place, so the display for Number will be 2.

Repeats in the secret code can also occur, and so you need to look out for this too. Below are some examples secret codes and guesses, and the results that they would get:

Code: 4,4,6     Guess: 2,3,4     Sequence: 0   Number: 2
Code: 4,4,6     Guess: 3,4,5     Sequence: 1   Number: 1
Code: 4,4,6     Guess: 4,5,6     Sequence: 2   Number: 1

Strategies

If you just try numbers at random you are likely to ‘get lost’ and forget what you have tried already, so it’s best to use some sort of logical strategy. You’ll need to find what numbers are in the code, and then secondly work out what position within the code each digit should be – and then you’ll need to remember which facts you know while you find the other numbers and sequences! This will be easier when you find a strategy and follow it – but remember, you get points for speed and for the least number of guesses, and if you take too long you will run out of time, so you can’t spend too long working out your approach!

Instructions screen and pausing the game

  1. Now updated on the app store, version 1.1 works with OS 3.0, and shows the correct answer when you run out of time – which might help beginners understand the game quicker, and might frustrate better players when they see how close they were to the right answer!

  2. Just a note to say that version 1.3 has been out for a few weeks now – fixed a bug with high scores not being displayed if user didn’t visit the app’s settings page (was storing them correctly but not picking them up) and also added a ‘rate this app’ dialog when you get a good score.

When the app was free at the end of May, over 1000 people downloaded it, and since the 1.3 update went out, over 400 people downloaded the update. Still not heard from anyone who’s beaten my high score though!

  3. I’m unable to adjust the difficulty settings for the codespin game because the application doesn’t allow me to quit nor does it present the home screen when I launch the application. I have OS 3.0.

    Thanks

    1. Hi Jermel,

the game doesn’t have a welcome screen if that’s what you mean. To get to the instructions screen, press the i icon in the top right corner.

To change the difficulty, quit the game, and go into Settings on your iPhone/iPod Touch. If you scroll down you should see CodeSpin as one of the options toward the bottom. Tap that, and then tap on ‘Skill Level’ and select the difficulty.

      hope this helps,
      Chris.
